Our friends at SRW have written an insightful article offering guidance on when to use double-sided woven fabric versus non-woven landscape fabric, which provides detailed information on the specific applications and benefits of each type of fabric, helping you make an informed decision for your landscaping projects. We’re excited to share this valuable resource with you, as it can greatly enhance the effectiveness and longevity of your landscaping efforts.

What are double-sided or “capped” geotextiles?

There is no shortage of fabric options out there, but how do you know which geotextile fabric to use? Every application is different and needs something specific. We’re going to dig deeper into the capped geotextiles and what sets them apart.

Our premium landscape fabric line is contractor-grade for professional and high-end applications that are built to stand the test of time. They are double-sided or “capped” geotextiles made of both woven and non-woven polypropylene fibers, giving it the strength of a woven and the permittivity of a non-woven. The big brother to our General Landscaping Spunbond line of geotextiles.

It’s a superior quality, woven geotextile fabric produced by needle punching polypropylene fibers into the woven scrim to form a high-strength fabric with better water permeability than a woven alone. The polypropylene yarns of the woven side are specially formulated to resist UV light deterioration and are inert to commonly encountered soil chemicals. The fabric will not rot or mildew, is non-biodegradable and is resistant to damage from insects and rodents.

Dual-Purpose Landscape Fabric Applications

Why do I need a dual purpose woven/ non-woven landscape fabric? Let’s tackle that with an ideal application setting. When building out a commercial landscape garden, it will give you the permeability and water flow for your plants to have moisture and nutrients to thrive, but also provide a long-lasting fabric that will not break down and give you the best weed barrier, making it less maintenance for grounds crew to keep the landscaping looking lush and fresh. To keep mulch in place and lasting longer, try a mulch stabilizer.

Let’s talk about mulch a little more. When putting down mulch on a flat surface, hill or incline, install the fabric with the fuzzy side up for stabilization to keep the mulch from moving around. The fuzzy side up will grab and attach itself naturally to the mulch. A mulch stabilizer would be ideal to use in this installation as well to keep the mulch in place.

Why would the resistance of UV light deterioration be handy? Think about tree and produce farms where you need your fabric to have a strong weed barrier, planting strips, and resistance to UV light deterioration due to not covering the fabric and leaving it bare so that you can frequently access the plant life and replant. This fabric can last up to two seasons or longer, all depending on the severity of the UV light in the area.
